    Welcome to Progressive British Muslims

    After the events of 7/7, Progressive British Muslims launched as a group of liberal Muslims. We decided to establish a platform to provide a voice for progressive British Muslims as we felt unrepresented by the existing faith-based Muslim groups. We each have a cultural identity as Muslims that is important to us. We believe there is no single definitive version of Islam and that each individual must decide how best to live his or her life.

    Since then, pbm has evolved. We want to build capacity in the Muslim community to tackle violent extremism and are working with local authorities and central government to achieve this. We will act as a strong voice for progressive Muslims in the UK through our press & policy team.

    pbm does not claim to represent any particular group of British Muslims. We speak only for ourselves but believe, based on our personal experiences, that we reflect the views of significant numbers of Muslims in Britain. Please find out more about us.

    pbm has some core values, we aim for:

    • equality in the Muslim community, especially between men and women, but also address equality issues based on sexual preference and disability;
    • Muslim integration into mainstream British society whilst maintaining an Islamic identity;
    • freedom of speech;
    • respect for all faiths;
    • human rights and democracy;
    • Progressive politics are good for all - no one should level down the aspirations of any group.
